2010 Laser Sandcastles

Postby rlasater » Wed Jul 28, 2010 7:07 pm

We have (finally) been able to get this year's sandcastles online. Please come check them out. As usual there are Pointools POD and and .pts files of the sandcastles available to download. We also have some .obj meshes available to play with.

For those of you who are not familiar with the laser-castles, each year we image the winning entries from the American Institute of Architects - Houston Chapter, Sandcastle Building Contest. This was the 24th year the event was held in Galveston, Texas. Over 60 teams and 30,000 people attended! It was hot, luckily no oil on the beach though.

Cheers

You've scanned these "each year" for the past 24 years? Really? That's pretty impressive.

Richard,

That looks amazing! even better than last years.

I really like the work you have done to the scan with 3D Reshaper and ZBrush.

ZBrush is my favorite of all programs and I sometimes spend hours at home sculpting things with it. For those of you that are not familiar with ZBrush, just google it and click the images tab, you will be amazed ;)

Great work! :D

No, the next 24 years hopefully :D

Matt, I agree, zbrush is way-cool. There is a lot of deep math behind that one. We just completed a job which required structured light scanning to polygons, adding CAD elements, then skinning the whole thing as an iges nurb solid. Learned a lot about how polygons and nurbs don't like each other!

Yes, Nurbs are infinately more complicated at first but are much more versatile in terms of the shapes that can be made with them and the controlability over those shapes. Its much easier to convert nurbs to polygons than polygons to nurbs. Sounds like it was a tough project.
